Obituary of Devika D Hetti Muhandiramge Dona
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Devika Hetti Muhandiramge Dona on November 9, 2024, in Fort McMurray, Alberta, at the age of 64, after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer.
Devika was born in Sri Lanka to Hettimuhandiramge Don Dharmasena and Balasuriyage Yassawathi Perera. As the middle child among four siblings, she grew up surrounded by love, deep-rooted traditions, and a strong sense of community. A devoted Buddhist, she spent her Sunday’s teaching at the temple near her childhood home, sharing her wisdom and compassion with others.
She pursued a career in nursing, beginning her practice in Sri Lanka from 1985 to 1990 before continuing her work in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from 1990 to 1995. It was during these years that she formed lifelong friendships, bonds so strong that they endured decades and distance, with one dear friend even traveling to stay by her side during her final months.
Devika had an extraordinary gift for touching hearts. Her kindness knew no boundaries, and her presence brought comfort to anyone lucky enough to know her. She had a way of making everyone feel seen, valued, and cared for—no matter their background or circumstances.
In March 1996, she married Priyal Perera, and together they welcomed two beloved children, Priyathra Perera, and Priyath Perera, in 1997 and 1998, respectively. Her children were her pride and joy, and she poured her heart into nurturing and guiding them.
In March 2007, Devika moved to Canada with her children to join her husband, who had arrived the year prior. Settling in Fort McMurray, Alberta, she worked various jobs, but her most cherished role was as a Disability Support Worker for the Salvation Army. Her warm personality and playful spirit allowed her to build deep, therapeutic connections with her clients.
Devika’s warmth and compassion extended far beyond her workplace, leaving an indelible mark on her community. Her kindness and genuine care created deep connections with everyone she met. During her final months, her community surrounded her with love—visiting her in the hospital, preparing her favorite meals, and offering their time and presence to ensure she was never alone.
She is survived by her loving husband, Priyal Perera; her children, Priyathra Perera and Priyath Perera; her cherished sisters, Dhammika Perera and Chamari Renuka, and her two brothers in Sri Lanka.
As per Devika’s wishes, no funeral or viewing service was held. Though she had hoped to visit her homeland in September 2024, her health did not allow her to make the journey. The family plans to honor her wishes by taking her ashes back to Sri Lanka in 2025, where she will be laid to rest.
Losing Devika has left an unfillable void in the hearts of those who loved her. Her laughter, kindness, playful spirit and gentle wisdom will be deeply missed.
She often reminded her children of a profound Buddhist teaching:
“Life is uncertain, death is certain.”
In her fearless spirit, let us honor her memory by embodying the kindness, strength, and love she so effortlessly gave to the world.
May she find peace and serenity on her journey beyond this life.
In Loving Memory
