Obituary of Ivan Robert Brinston

Please share a memory of Ivan to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Ivan was born on Sound Island, Newfoundland and passed peacefully away in Fort McMurray, Alberta on Thursday January 23, 2025, surrounded by his daughter, Angela Pelger and grandchildren: Blake Brinston, Paige Brinston and Mikel Pelger.

Ivan worked in Labrador City for IOC until 1979 when he was hired by Syncrude in Fort McMurray, Alberta. He spent his working career there in the Extraction Plant, rarely missing a day of work. Ivan retired in March of 2004 and moved to Garden Cove, Newfoundland until December of 2009. After his stroke in January 2010, he resided with his daughter, son- in-law and grandchildren. When they could no longer care for Ivan's medical needs, he moved into Willow Square Continuing Care Facility in Fort McMurray. Ivan enjoyed his time there making many friends.

Ivan's pastimes included a mean game of cards, he would snag anyone to have a game, and his grandchildren always were happy to play. Ivan played darts in the years prior to his stroke, he loved the bottom of the board and his famous triple 19! His favorite things to do were to hunt, fish, camp, boating and his quad. Anytime he could be outside in the woods or on the bay he was there. Hunting in Northern Alberta with his nephews, Ernest Sullivan, John Sullivan, Larry Lalonde and his "brother" Dennis Moss. Ivan also loved to take his grandson Blake to the "hunting grounds" where they would spend a weekend outside. It was always a good hunting trip whether anything was caught. If you were lucky enough to have joined him, I'm sure you have amazing memories.

Pop Pop....

Loving, strong, selfless, brave, dedicated, patient, helpful, heart of gold,

World's Best Pop, amazing....

Blake, Paige and Mikel all enjoyed the stories their Pop would share with them. My favorite memories of my dad with each grandchild are precious.

Pop spent time babysitting Blake even as a young infant, watching Boston Bruin Games and pop repeating over and over "Pop Pop". Needless to say, Blake's first word wasn't mom it was Pop Pop.

Paige had Pop wrapped around her finger, he would always stop by either on his way to work or on his way home. Paige would sometimes be crying as new baby's do and I couldn't settle her. Pop would pick her up and her little hand would grab the few chest hairs he had and immediately stop crying.

Mikel being the youngest was entertainment for Pop, whether they were playing with Lego or dinky cars with pretend trips to Tim Hortons for pops black coffee (Mikel told him its hot) or later as Mikel grew endless games of Crazy 8's. Pop always had Mikel smiling and giggling.

As we all share our memories, favorite moments and reflect on what an amazing man he was, that is how we can respect and memorialize my dad. Ivan wasn't one for attention or fanfare so we will continue to celebrate him in our own way.

I can remember day trips hunting with my dad looking for deer or grouse. He would never let me walk the cutlines with him, or out of his Yellow Suzuki. One year I played my New Kids on the Block tape repeatedly. My dad knew all the words to "Hanging Tough"! The time I spent with my dad as a "daddy's girl" are numerous and I will treasure these memories. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, and his love for them is endless. I was blessed with an amazing dad, and he was the center of our world. He is now our very own special guardian Angel, and we know he will watch over us until we meet him again.

Ivan is survived by his daughter, Angela; son-in-law John; grandchildren, Blake, Paige and Mikel; step-grandson, Keyno Nelson; sister, Elizabeth (Wayne) Bussey; brother, Donald Brinston as well as numerous nieces and nephews across Canada.

He was predeceased by his parents, Ronald and Flora (Beck) Brinston; brother, William Brinston; sister, Audrey (Boyd) Eddy; twin brothers, Reg and Donald Brinston, and nephew, Matthew Brinston.

Ivan's final resting place with be with his family in the Gardn Cove Cemetery at a later date. We are positive they are welcoming him with open arms, a little Bacardi and maybe a deck of cards.
