


Obituary of Shannon Hazel Coates
Shannon Hazel Coates was born on May 24, 1966, in Fort St. John, B.C. to Thomas Barry Coates and Carole Hunter Coates both of whom have predeceased her. Shannon passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at the Royal Alexandria Hospital in Edmonton, A.B. after an aggressive battle with cancer.
Shannon spent her early years in Whitehorse, Y.T. and her growing up years in Fort McMurray from the age of 4 years old until she left home. She attended school in Fort McMurray from grade one all the way through to University Transfer courses at Keyano College. At that time, her debilitating mental condition forbade her from carrying on.
She is the daughter of the late Thomas Barry Coates and adopted daughter to Elise Therese Antoine-Coates. Shannon leaves to survive her, a daughter: Lynette Elise Raymond.
She is survived by sister: V. Lori Connors; brothers: A. Jay G. Coates (Kristen), and Kelly G. Coates (Tracey); nephews: John Ryan Stalker, Ben, Charlie, Jayce, Justyce Coates, Tyler & Jordan Mason, AJ & Jonathan Coates; as well as many friends and extended family members.
Shannon was a member of the Antoine Family of Fort Chipewyan and was loved by many aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was predeceased by her grandmother Therese Sewepagaham-Antoine-Voyageur and grandfather Isadore Voyageur. Her paternal grandparents: Stanley and Hazel Coates of Caron, S.K. will greet her on her arrival in heaven.
The viewing will take place at Robert Anderson Funeral Services in Fort McMurray on February 19, 2025, starting at 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. The address of the funeral home is #115, 190 MacAlpine Crescent, Fort McMurray, A.B. Cremation will take place at the Athabasca Community Chapel 3403 – 48th Avenue, Athabasca, A.B. following the service in Fort McMurray.
At the time of need, her younger sister Lori, stepped up to provide support and guidance to family and friends. She was crucial in the organization and planning for Shannon’s Celebration of Life. Prayers will be led by her older brother Jay. Her younger brother Kelly will drum her way to the Great Spirit. Shannon was a very spiritual person who would have been pleased to have her brothers ease her passage in this way.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association, and the Cancer Society.
Reception to follow at 717 Beacon Hill Drive, Fort McMurray at the home of Elise Coates for a light lunch.
