It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Donald Ray Mathers, who peacefully left us on Thursday, February 27, 2025.
Donald Mathers was raised in Calgary Alberta, where he was an energetic young man who loved adrenaline which would remain a theme his whole life. Donald, or Don/Donnie as many knew him, loved skiing, muscle cars and motorcycles as a young man and always maintained a sense of adventure. Talented, bright, and hard working he excelled in trades becoming a pipe fitter, welder & sprinkler fitter. Soon after joining the trades, Don moved to Fort McMurray where he has resided for the last 30+ years. In a pool of northern Edmonton Oilers fans, Don managed to stay true to the Calgary Flames.
Many knew him as Donald, many knew him as Donnie and some knew him as Don, and depending on what you called him; might depend on the mountain he was climbing at the time. Don’s love of motorcycles was beautiful to listen to and his passion was contagious, spreading to his inner circle. Later in life, Don found a love of Mexico and an obsession for skydiving which he pursued until his health allowed it no more. Known for his gravelly voice, his love of laughter and a good joke, Don touched the lives and hearts of many. He was always willing to help a friend out and step into harms way if needed to protect those he loved. He was a dedicated friend, with true blue eyes and a one-of-a-kind memorable chuckle.
Don is survived by his father, George Alton Mathers; son, Jessie Ray Mathers; daughter Jacquline Dawn Mathers; granddaughter, Violet Mathers; stepdaughter, Victoria Hewitt (Andrew); grandson, Channing; granddaughter, Collins; stepdaughter, Danielle Hewitt.
Don is pre-deceased by his mother, Rosalie Rita Mathers.
A Celebration of Life for Don will be held at Doug Barnes cabin, 161 Tamarack Way, Fort McMurray, Alberta on March 28th at 1:00 pm. All who knew and loved him are welcome to attend. Lunch to follow.
