Hugo Godoi Obituary

It is with tremendous sadness we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of our beloved, Son, Brother, Nephew, Grandson, and Friend, Hugo Godoi of Fort McMurray, AB, on Sunday August 17, 2025.

Hugo was a one of kind young man. He was a natural born leader and athlete. You’d often find him on the ski hill, basketball court, in the pool or in the gym weight training. One year, during the Jasper Junior Olympics he came in 4th overall for skiing, and 2nd for his division. His win may be attributed partially to his years of training at the Vista Ridge Ski Park, but mainly due to his natural talent. He had been on the Fort McMurray Ski Team and in the Fort McMurray Swim Club.

He was also quite skilled on the basketball court. He would play against his dad on Sundays at the Syncrude Athletic Park. Darren knew that one day soon his son would beat him at basketball. He saw the raw talent Hugo possessed and was so very proud of the accomplished athlete and young man his son was becoming.

Hugo took great pride in his health, physically, mentally and spiritually. He was deeply connected to his faith and his church, Fort City, and their youth group. He believed in community and lending a helping hand were ever he could. One year Hugo lead the youth group in fundraising for a trip to San Francisco, USA, to help and support the unhoused population. He and his team spent a week doing all they could to support the community there.

His spirituality and faith kept him grounded and humble. He was always a supportive friend. Anytime someone needed a hand or a shoulder to cry on Hugo was there ready to help. He was the kind of young man that would offer you the shirt off his back with a smile and later check in to ensure you were doing okay. Hugo supported his family in much the same way. Always ready to assist his grandparents with any chores or work. As much as he was a lover, not a fighter, he was fiercely protective of his friends and family and would not hesitate to defend them at a moment’s notice.

While only 15 years old he was wise beyond his years. Hugo was a deep thinker who could get lost in thought about the world and how things work. He was a curious young man who lived fearlessly. Unafraid to ask the big questions and seek out more intricate answers if his thirst for knowledge was not satisfied.

He was born and raised in Fort McMurray, AB, but had connections to Brazil on his mother’s side. During the winter he’d enjoy the snow and skiing in Alberta, then take trips to Brazil to visit family and explore.  No matter the country though, Hugo was drawn to the beauty of the mountains and the waves of the beautiful Brazilian beaches!

Hugo had a zest for life. A strong will to always do what is right and stand by his morals, family and friends. He was a leader, athlete, humanitarian, and adventurer.

He is survived by his loving parents, Darren and Viviane; brother, Davi; grandparents, Yeda, Marianne, and Helios; uncles, Daniel, Antonio, and Travis; uncle and godfather, Rafael; and great-grandma, Daisy.

He will be remembered with fond and loving memories. His loss is immeasurable, so is the impact and love he left behind! He will be forever in our hearts.
