Cyril Moss was born on November 17, 1956, in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, to Vera and William Moss. The oldest son, he spent his childhood on the Gambo River catching salmon and in the woods behind his home snaring rabbits to bring back for his mother to prepare.
Cyril met the love of his life, Marg, in 1984. They married on April 12th, 1985 and settled in The Cove, where they welcomed their two children, Joshua and Stephanie. Cyril spent his days working, cutting wood, or out on the water, going out the bay with his brothers-in-law, Eg, Bernard and Jim.
In the spring of 1997, Cyril and Marg moved to Alberta, building a life for their family that the place he called home, Newfoundland, couldn’t offer at the time. Cyril continued his lifelong passion for hunting, later gaining a hunting buddy in his son and best friend Josh, and sometimes, his daughter, daddy’s little girl, Stephanie.
His greatest joy, however, came later in life: his grandchildren. After retiring in 2012, Cyril and Marg returned to Newfoundland for a few years before moving back to Alberta in 2019. There, they spent their days caring for their grandchildren, seeing them to and from school and sharing in every moment in between. The room always got a little brighter whenever Cyril’s grandchildren walked into it.
Cyril faced a short but courageous battle in the end, surrounded by the love of his family. We take comfort in knowing there was a great reunion in heaven when he arrived, but none happier to see him than his longest hunting partner, his dog Buster.
Cyril leaves behind to mourn his loving wife of 40 years, Marg; his son Joshua (Shannon); daughter Stephanie (Jason); granddaughters Kailee and Brooklyn; and grandson Liam. He is also survived by his sisters Leona, Ger (Aubrey), Hilda (Mik), Lori (Danny), and Vera (Ray); brothers Robbie (Lori), Donnie, and Leon (Judy); as well as many in-laws, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.
Cyril is predeceased by his parents, Vera and William; parents-in-law, Clarence and Annie McDonald; sisters Theresa, Madeline, and Bernie; brothers Stephen and Bill; nephews Rodney & Jeremy; and many brothers- and sisters-in-law.
Cyril will be remembered for his quiet strength, steady kindness, and unwavering love for his family. He will also be remembered for his love of scarring people, his love for sitting with family playing poker or singing many of his favourite songs, such as “May I sleep in your barn tonight Mister?”, and his blunt way with words, especially in his final days at the hospital, that would send his family into fits of laughter. His legacy lives on in the laughter of his grandchildren and the countless stories of the man who could make any moose shiver in their skin.
A cremation will take place with a Celebration of Life to happen around of what would have been his 69th birthday in November, details to follow.
