It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of Harold Claude Smith on December 29, 2025, at the Northern Lights Regional Healthcare Centre in Fort McMurray, Alberta, at the age of 90.
Harold was born in Burin, Newfoundland on February 23,1935. He was always a person cracking jokes to make you laugh which in turn made his future wife Annie fall in love with him. They were married on February 4th, 1958. They spent 49 years together before her passing.
A hard-working man through and through, Harold spent over 35 years working aboard a fishing trawler on the Atlantic. Life at sea meant long days and time away from home, but it was work he did willingly to provide for his family. After leaving the trawler, Harold semi-retired until a workplace accident forced an early retirement.
Harold had a deep passion for all sports especially hockey. He could list stats, players, and had very strong opinions especially about the commentators—and he wasn’t shy about sharing them. His number one team, without question, was the Detroit Red Wings. One of his cherished memories was a road trip to Detroit with his brother Barry and friends.
After some time Harold moved to live with his grandson Barry, wife Lori and great-grandchildren Andrew, Annie, and Ava. Watching them grow up kept him young and full of spunk, always cracking jokes or singing around the house. He held a special place in their hearts.
He is survived by daughter Pamela (Bill); sons Boyd (Amanda), and Ed; sister Beryl, sister-in-law Denise. Grandchildren, Barry (Lori), Calvin (Jordan), Kelly (Lyndon), Collin (Ashlee), Jeffrey (Sarah), and Kevin. 15 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson Myles, along with a large and loving group of family and friends who will miss him dearly.
Harold was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Daisy Smith; his beloved wife, Annie; his brothers Boyd, Barry, and Charlie; and sister Dorothy.
A heartfelt thank you to all who shared the road with Harold and meant so much to him. A celebration of life will happen at a later date.
