It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our father, Downey “Don” Hugh McGladdery in Fort McMurray.

Downey was a very active member of every community he was a part of. He was well-read, informed, and opinionated in a wide range of topics, and was always determined to have a positive outlook.  His background as a farm kid, tractor mechanic, welder, and mechanical engineer enabled him to come up with creative and practical solutions for any problems that he encountered, which he attacked enthusiastically. He was a member of many community organizations including the Civil Air Patrol, Ducks Unlimited, Rotary International, and the Athabasca County Council. Above all, he was a really good dad and mentor.

He is survived by wife of 64 years, Ellen (nee Berntson), children Kevin, Patricia, Suzanne, and Gavin, as well as his brother Glen and a large family of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents Hugh and Bernice, sister Yvonne, and brothers Barry, Douglas, and Donald.

We will miss him.
