Patrick August Hengel

1943 – 2026

It is great sadness we announce the death of Pat Hengel on May 7, 2026 at the age of 82 years old.  He passed away at the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre surrounded by his loving family after a short battle with cancer.

Left on earth to treasure his memory are 2 daughters Michele (Mark) Heinish, Sandy (Darrin) Eckel, 5 grandchildren Cody (Becca) Heinish, Karissa Heinish (Alex), Meagan Eckel (Matthew), Lauren Eckel (Jack), and Travis Eckel (Tamsin), 2 great grandchildren Xander & Cecilia Heinish. As well as many nieces & nephews.

Pat was born in Edmonton on May 26, 1943. He grew up in Winfield, AB the youngest of 5 kids.  In 1966 he married the love of his life Dianne.  In 1967 they moved to Fort McMurray where Pat would start a 34 year career at GCOS (Suncor) and raised their family.

At a young age, Pat took up hunting with his brothers, a passion that carried well into adulthood. When he was in Fort McMurray he formed lifelong friendships with five great friends and countless adventures began aboard the old the hunting bus they shared together for more than 30 years

Golf was another great passion in Pat’s life; one he loved sharing with family. If he could have golfed seven days a week, he certainly would have. Living in Fort McMurray meant the golf season was limited, so Pat found the perfect solution — spending winters in Palm Springs, where he happily chased that little white ball across many beautiful courses.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the amazing nurses & doctors on the Medicine/Palliative Care ward at the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre. 

Cremation has taken place.  Funeral service will be held at St John’s Baptist Church, 3 Hospital Street, July 11th at 11:00 with luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Northern Lights Regional Health Foundation – Medicine Unit.
