It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Father, Grandfather, Brother, Cousin, Uncle, and Friend; David Carson McWhiter on August 22, 2026, in Fort McMurray, AB.

He was born in Cape Breton NS, Reserve Mines, Son of late John "Jack" Bennett and mother Agnes "Bio" McWhirter 

David was a hard-working and family orientated man. He was a jack-of-all-trades, and master of some, when it came to his work and hobbies, any job or task he took on he did so with professionalism and a thirst for knowledge.

He worked in the autobody industry for several years. As time went on, he eventually opened his own shop: “Dave’s Alternator and Starter Repair”. He was a skilled mechanic and entrepreneur!

Later in life he picked up the hobbies of CB Radios and then got his Ham operator License and enjoyed being a leather maker, often crafting belts and purses, guitar straps wallets and many more beautiful pieces. Any time something piqued his interest, he approached the activity first with his research abilities. Locating any and all books and articles about the craft. Then second with finesse, wowing family and friends with his newfound skills. There was nothing he couldn’t do. From metal detecting to playing guitar, he was a truly intelligent and impressive man.

David loved spending time with his two children, Melissa and John, his grandchildren family and friends.  He doted on the love of his life, his wife, Carmel. In his younger years, he’d take the family camping, and out on adventures, and always visiting and making his rounds for a cup of tea.

He loved his classic muscle cars, owning a few himself. If he wasn’t with his family, he could be found out on a relaxing car ride or on his Honda Gold Wing he enjoyed riding his motorcycle with family and friends.

His is survived by his loving children, Melissa McWhirter (David Nearing) and John McWhirter; grandchildren, Mathew McWhirter-Nearing, and Carson McWhirter-Nearing; sister, Mary “Ranni” Martell (Johnny), best Friend Daniel (Danny) MacLean (Doreen) cousins, Mickey McNeil (Diane) as well as numerous extended family nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

David was predeceased by his best friend and loving wife, Carmel McWhirter; sister, Isabell Donovan; brother, Jimmy Bennet; and grandson, Dylan McWhirter.

David will always be remembered for his big smile, kind spirit, and incredible sense of humor. He will be forever missed by all those who were honoured to have met him.

A very special thank you to Dad’s cousin Mickey and wife Diane McNeil for all the love and support during dad’s journey in Toronto as well as the neighbours Richard and Beth Sheppard and best friend Daniel (Danny) MacLean (Doreen)for all the love and support through all the years of their friendship.

Also, A special thank you to my family David Nearing, my brother John McWhirter and children Matthew and Carson for helping to have everything done at the house for dad I couldn’t have done it without you all
