Obituary of Edith Lillian Batten

Please share a memory of Edith to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
We will hold you close within our hearts, and there you will remain to walk and guide us through our lives until we meet again. It is will broken hearts that our family announces the peaceful passing of our most beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. Edith was born in 1948 in Bay Roberts, Newfoundland and had nine siblings she loved dearly. In 1968, she married her love Gerald Batten, and later that year, they had their only daughter and child, Tracey. They spent the next 11 years living in Newfoundland. During that time, Edith was a telephone operator for Newfoundland Telephone. In 1979 they moved to Fort McMurray, where she would live the rest of her life. Anyone that knew Edith knew her first love was her family and friends, that became family. Followed by a close second was her career in retail Jewellery management for 37 years. Her customers became some of her dearest friends, so much so that she was invited to many of their celebrations and would return with their children to buy their most precious gems for the next generation. Edith had a very successful career; she won many awards, including the highest sales in Canada for many consecutive years. One of the happiest days of her life was the day her two grandsons were born, followed by the birth of her great-granddaughter; they truly were the light of her life. She was the best nan/nanna. Her fun-loving spirit and humour could light up a room. Always singing and dancing, always the life of the party. Edith leaves to mourn her husband of 52 years, Gerald Batten, Daughter Tracey (Pat), Grandsons, Jeffrey Hefferan, Joshua Hefferan, Great-granddaughter Emily Hefferan, Sisters, Olga French (NL), Florence Cummings (NL), Faye Reese ( NL), Doneka Mercer (NL) Brothers Jack Mercer (NL), Aubrey Mercer (NL) Special Son in law, Derrick Hefferan (Juanitta), Mother of her great-granddaughter and dear friend, Kristin Pearce Her friends that became sisters, Angela Hynes, Kalya McColm, Ruth Richards and many nieces, great nieces, nephews and great-nephews. So many more that affectionately called her “mom” and “nan” . Edith was predeceased by her loving parents, James and Elizabeth Mercer, Brothers Cyril Mercer, Earl Mercer and sister Mildred O’Conner. A heartfelt thank you to the staff at Willow Continuing Care Center for the care, love, and friendship they provided Edith during her last chapter. They laughed, sang and cried with her when she went on her final journey. The compassion they gave her family will always be lovingly etched in their hearts.
